NEW YORK, N.Y. (KMIZ)

Kansas City pitcher Jordan Lyles continued a rocky 2023 season with his 12th loss of the year, on Sunday. The Royals offense tried to make up ground, but it was too little too late, as the Yankees won 8-5 in New York.

KC's loss also meant that New York secured the series sweep, as well. Kansas City is riding a five-game losing streak, as well as a five-series losing streak, dating back to before the All-Star break.

Lyles lasted five innings on the bump at Yankee Stadium, letting five earned runs get across home plate on nine hits.

The Royals' bats were resilient, despite the Yankees getting out to a five-run lead through the first three innings. Salvador Perez, Michael Massey, Freddy Fermin and Kyle Isbel all homered to get KC within three runs, however, the deficit proved too much.

Up next - The road trip will continue, as Kansas City makes its way to Cleveland to meet the Guardians. First pitch is at 6:10 p.m. on Monday, July 24.
