Cardinals drop third-straight in series loss to the Cubs
Despite landing more hits, the Cardinals lost the club's third straight game in Chicago, on Sunday. The rival Cubs put up seven runs in the first three innings on the group's way to a 7-2 win at Wrigley Field.
With the loss, STL dropped to 44-56 overall in 2023, as Chicago won the series 3-1. St. Louis and Pittsburgh are still going back and forth for last place in the National League central standings. Both teams are a full 11 games back from the first place Brewers.
Jordan Montgomery fell to 6-8 with the loss at Wrigley Field. He tossed for six innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. Zach Thompson pitched solid relief, not allowing any runs to come home, but it was too little too late.
The red bird offense couldn't pick up the slack either. St. Louis actually out-hit Chicago, 8-7, but couldn't always capitalize with runners in scoring position. Dylan Carlson was the only one to break through. He plated both of the Cardinals' two runs.
Up next - the Cardinals will look to get back on track with a trip to Arizona to meet the Diamondbacks. It will also be time for the expected return of pitcher Adam Wainwright. He is currently set to get the start against Arizona on Monday, July 24. First pitch is at 8:40 p.m. CT.
