Gates' team this season will be led by four returning captains: Nick Honor, Noah Carter, Sean East and Mabor Majak.

"The difference a year makes in our program not only for our current and our former players, but also players that are deciding on possibly becoming Mizzou Tigers," Gates said. "I think what separates us is our player development program and our ability to get guys through the process. What greater data out there than to see these guys be successful in the Summer League."

With seven total returners, Gates is also welcoming a lot of talent from the transfer portal, as well as incoming freshman.

Three freshman stood out at Saturday's practice including: Anthony Robinson, Trent Pierce and Jordan Butler.

In addition to the freshman, Gates added some additional experience to his group from the portal.

Last years JUCO player of the year Curt Lewis showed ability to knock down shots and handle the ball in the open practice, plus Tamar Bates and John Tonje showed comfort and confidence.

Honor set high expectations for transfer Caleb Grill from Iowa State saying, “I’m going on the record now, he’s the best shooter in the country.”

The team is getting set to leave for Jamaica on Sunday where the team will hold scrimmages and play against teams of international and local professionals.
