Jefferson City returning key offensive pieces in year three under Damon Wells

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

After getting just over .500 in his first two seasons as the head football coach of the Jefferson City Jays, Damon Wells is hoping to use his experience to his advantage this season and go deeper into a playoff run.

"Our kids are winners and they believe they're going to win when they take the field. Obviously, it doesn't always work out that way, but we're going to prepare to win. We're going to prepare to be successful and I can tell you that each and every week that they have belief. I think they understand the process and understand the value in some of the things we're asking them to do," Wells said.

As Wells enters his third season at the helm in JC, he says he truly feels like his team has bought into his game plan and have been putting the work in so far this summer.

"It's an excited time, everybody's undefeated right now," Wells said. "We say that every team has a one year life span and it's exciting to see what the lifespan and the personality and the identity of this particular team is going to be."

Wells is returning some key parts of last year's team, mainly on the offense. Starting quarterback Jacob Willson is entering his senior season, as well as running back Kentrell Jordan.

"It's important to have those kids back that we have returning, mostly because they're great people," Wells said. "We love the fact that they're willing to step up and be the tip of the spear and to challenge negative behaviors and to demonstrate the buy in to the qualities that we think are most directly related to winning football games."

Jefferson City will kick off the season at Adkins Stadium on Aug. 25 against Osage at 7 p.m.
