The St. Louis Cardinals registered the club's first series win since May 18-21 with a win against the New York Mets on Sunday. In an offensive showdown, STL just edged out New York, 8-7.

Sunday's win marked two-straight for the red birds. On Saturday, St. Louis won 5-3 to even up the series in Queens and also snap a six-game skid. The Cardinals are now 28-43 overall in 2023 and 8.5 games out of first place in the central standings of the National League.

Matthew Liberatore got the start on the bump for St. Louis on Sunday, however, Drew VeerHagen was awarded the win to remain undefeated, so far, this season. VerHagen pitched for a little more than an inning, allowing no runs with one strikeout. Earlier in the game, Liberatore allowed five earned runs on four hits over four innings of work.

It was a home run derby at Citi Field, as six total homers were hit. The Cardinals came up with four of those home runs off the bats of Nolan Arenado, Paul DeJong and Jordan Walker. Arenado led the team with two home runs and three RBI.

Former Cardinal Tommy Pham tied up the game with a two-run homer for New York in the fifth inning, but St. Louis got the last word with Arenado's ninth inning solo home run to seal the series win for skipper Oli Marmol and company.

Up next - St. Louis will stay on the east coast and make a trip to Washington D.C. to meet the Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. on Monday, June 19.
