Sunday Sit-down with Chris Kwiecinski
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
ABC 17 Sports Director Nathalie Jones brought on the Columbia Tribune's sports editor Chris Kwiecinski in this week's edition of Sunday Sit-down.
The two talked about everything from the NBA to the NFL Draft. The big news on Sunday came in the form of MU star forward Kobe Brown's announced that he will be going to the NBA Draft, while still maintaining his eligibility.
The news came on the last day that Brown could declare for the Draft. In ESPN's mock drafts he is projected to be a second round pick, possibly landing in San Antonio. Kwiecinski said it might be good for him to strike while the iron is hot.
"I've seen a lot of mock drafts right now that have him as a second round pick and if he's in that range, it kind of begs the question, do you take that? Or do you kind of bet on yourself to come back?," he said. "The flip side of that is that he did so well this year. He was so good. He was so good at literally everything that why don't you just take it while the stock is high. Or you could risk injury, you could risk having a different season with a lot of different moving parks with this roster that we've seen, especially the last couple of weeks."
The NFL Draft is also coming up in the next few days. Thursday, April 27 is the first round at Union Station in downtown Kansas City. Mizzou has a number of guys who are hanging in the balance in this year's draft. The headliner of MU's group is defensive end Isaiah McGuire.
"He's an all around defensive end. He's a guy that can play multiple schemes, you can play multiple positions," Kwiecinski said. "When you talk about what he was able to do with the 4-2-5 with Blake Baker. He had seven sacks, you know, a lot of a lot of pressure on the quarterback consistent too, when you talk about pressure when it mattered most. Two sacks in the Arkansas game, two sacks in the South Carolina game and when you look at that body of work and say, 'okay, he's got the size. He's got the he's got the tools. He's got the talent.' That's the kind of guy that I'm expecting to go in the third, fourth round."
In addition to McGuire, safety Martez Manuel, wide receiver Barrett Banister, defensive lineman DJ Coleman, tight end Kibet Chepyator, kicker Sean Koetting and long snapper Jake Hoffman all worked out in front of NFL scouts during MU's pro day. They will all wait to hear their names during the draft or get a call after.
Kwiecinski said it's important for Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz to show recruits that his guys can be successful at the next level.
