Four home runs lift the Cardinals to a series win against the Blue Jays
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Cardinal bats were scorching at Busch Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as St. Louis lifted up four home runs on its way to a 9-4 win over Toronto. With the win, the Cardinals also win the opening series, 2-1.
St. Louis came out firing in the first inning with three home runs. Brendan Donovan hit one out on the first pitch of the game and Alec Burleson went back-to-back, with another home run right after Donovan. Later in the first inning, Nolan Gorman hit his first of two home runs, which put the Red Birds up 4-0.
The Blue Jays did make it a ball game, as Matt Chapman, Whit Merrifield and Danny Jansen drove in the runs in the bottom of the first inning to make it a 4-3 ball game.
However, the St. Louis offense was too much for Toronto to contain. In the third inning, Nolan Arenado plated a run and Gorman hit his second home run of the day. The Cardinals also scored in the fourth inning with Donovan and Burleson both bringing in runners.
Pitcher Jordan Montgomery notched his first win of the season on Sunday. Although he got off to a rocky start, he went for five innings with three strikeouts and three earned runs allowed.
Up next - St. Louis will stay home to host the Atlanta Braves on Monday, April 3. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m.
