No. 23 Mizzou softball takes down Kansas City in home opener

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The 23rd ranked Mizzou softball team took down Kansas City 11-5 Wednesday in the team's home opener.

The Tigers were led on the mound by freshman pitcher Cierra Harrison who pitched five innings allowing just one run on two hits and recording four strikeouts. Closer Taylor Pannell is also a freshman and started her time at Mizzou not allowing a single run in the final two innings.

At the plate, MU was led by junior left fielder Chantice Phillips with two hits and four RBI's including the first home run of the year at the Mizzou Softball Stadium. Junior short stop Jenna Laird also recorded two RBI's in the win.

With the win, Mizzou is now 16-6 on the season. Up next, the group will kick off SEC play in a three-game series against No. 20 Kentucky starting Friday at home at 4 p.m.
