Mid-Missouri wrestlers advance on day one of State Wrestling

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Day one of the 2023 Missouri State Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena kicked off on Wednesday and many Mid-Missouri wrestler punched their tickets through to the semifinals. 

Class 2 boys

The Class 2 boys quarterfinals were dominated by several local athletes. Kirksville managed to send three wrestlers onto day two. That list includes:

  • 113 lbs Justin Schutter
  • 120 lbs Austyn Hunter
  • 157 lbs Dominic Cahalan

Fulton also managed to send three wrestlers onto Thursday.

  • 106 lbs Cole Blattner
  • 157 lbs Elijah Brocksmith
  • 215 lbs JaDonte Ray

Several other Mid-Missouri schools are sending pairs through to the semifinals. Those who are advancing are listed below.

Blair Oaks:

  • 165 lbs Zach Rackers
  • 215 lbs Brady Kerperin

Hallsville:

  • 138 lbs Parker Crane
  • 144 lbs Gavynn Carpenter

Southern Boone is being representing in the semifinals by Hunter Jennings in the 150-pound class and Eldon sent one wrestler through in Jesiah Simmons in the 113 class.

Class 1 boys

Class 1 boys powerhouse Centralia currently sits at the top of the class with 89 points and eight wrestlers advancing to the semifinals on Thursday. The list includes:

  • 106 lbs Bryson Dubes
  • 120 lbs Brayden Dubes
  • 126 lbs Weston Ward
  • 132 lbs Jesse Shannon
  • 138 lbs Rex Bryson
  • 157 lbs Kyden Wilkerson
  • 165 lbs Brayden Shelton
  • 285 lbs Seth Hasekamp

The Father Tolton boys also finished day one strong sitting in fourth place with 51 points and four wrestlers continuing on. The list includes:

  • 113 lbs Christopher Ankenman
  • 126 lbs Frank Ruether
  • 150 lbs Justus Martin
  • 165 lbs Frank Hazelrigg

Marceline also managed to get a few wrestlers to the next round including Connor Quinn in the 144-pound weight class, Ryden Gooch in the 175-pound class and Scout Gooch in the 215 class.

Fatima's Alek Tune also advanced to the semifinals in the 113 class and Versailles' Tristin Gavette will be continuing on in the 215-pound class.

Class 1 girls

For the Class 1 girls, Southern Boone is the top Mid-Missouri team right now sitting in seventh. Their lone semifinalist is Callie Bergthold in the 115-pound class.

Jefferson City's Alexis Dunwiddie is advancing to day two with a pin in the 130-pound quarterfinals. Moberly will also have a wrestler in day two with Breanne Gibbs continuing on in the 145-pound semifinals.

Two local wrestlers continued on in the 235-pound bracket in Eldon's Sydney Searcy and Versailles' Sarah Huffman.

Tipton is sending two girls to the semifinals including Rachel Loganbill in the 100-pound weight class and Lily Burns in the 190-pound bracket.

Semifinals begin Thursday at Mizzou Arena at 8 a.m.
