COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

They did it again.

After trailing for most of the game and a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Kansas City Chiefs are once again Super Bowl champions, besting the Eagles 38-35 Sunday night at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.

After the Eagles inexplicably tied the game 35-all after a valiant drive with several big plays by quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Chiefs had the chance to control the outcome with just over 5 minutes to go.

Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Chiefs drove the ball to the Philadelphia 15, fueled by a 26-yard run by an allegedly injured Patrick Mahomes. On a third-and-8 on the 15, Mahomes launched a pass intended for wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster that fell incomplete... or so it appeared.

A defensive holding call on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry kept the drive going. The Eagles had one timeout remaining, Jerick McKinnon ran the ball to the left side of the field and had the chance to get the go-ahead touchdown and stop the clock with about 1:54 to go.

But, he opted to slide at the 2-yard line and force the Eagles to take their final timeout. The Chiefs bled out the clock and Harrison Butker redeemed his miss from earlier in the game with a 27-yard make to give the Chiefs the final lead, 38-35, with eight seconds to go.

Philadelphia had one more shot, but Hurts' final Hail Mary fell way short of the goal line, sealing the Chiefs' first Super Bowl victory since the 2019 season.

Mahomes -- who was named Super Bowl MVP -- finished the game with 21-of-27 passing, 182 yards in the air and three scores. On the ground, Mahomes also provided 44 yards on six carries. Running back Isaiah Pacheco led the rushing attack with 75 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Tight end Travis Kelce provided a team-leading 81 yards, six catches and a score.

Kansas City finished with 340 team yards.

On the Philadelphia side, Hurts had a game-high 307 yards on 27-of-38 passing, with one score through the air. He also led the Eagles on the ground with 70 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. DeVonta Smith had a game-high 100 yards on seven receptions. A.J. Brown provided 96 yards and a touchdown on six catches. The Eagles finished with 417 team yards.
