ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt won his first-ever National League MVP award on Thursday night. The slugger beat out his teammate, third baseman Nolan Arenado, for the honor.

The 35-year-old led the National League in slugging and OPS through the 2022 season. He hit .317 with 115 RBIs and 35 home runs.

St. Louis won the NL Central division title in 2022, but the group was knocked out in the wild card series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Through the first few months of the 2022 season, Goldschmidt was playing like a man on fire. He hit .332 with an OPS over 1.000. However, the first baseman hit a slump towards the end of the Cardinals' season, going 0-for-7 in the wild card.

Arenado finished in the top six in voting this season.
