ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis Cardinals secured the team's first ever sweep against the New York Yankees after a 12-9 win on Sunday.

In the back-and-forth battle, the Red Birds were led at the plate by Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong who both drove in four runs apiece.

Adam Wainwright started things on the mound allowing six earned runs in just over four innings, but it took five different pitchers to get the job done in St. Louis.

Saturday night was the largest crowd ever at Busch Stadium with 48,581 people there to witness the 1-0 nailbiter.

With the sweep, the Cardinals improve to 60-48 leading the division now by two games.

Up next - St. Louis will travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies starting Tuesday at 7:40 p.m.
