More than $5 million gift establishes Mizzou MBB endowment

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou Athletics said it received a $5.2 million commitment to establish a men's basketball endowment on Friday afternoon.

MU Athletics Director Desiree Reed-Francois said the gift came from the Whitten family, who are longtime supporters of Tiger athletics.

To honor the family's donation, the Mizzou men's basketball head coaching position will be named the, "Dorothy D. and Charles E. Whitten, Jr. Men's Basketball Head Coach." MU said the media should refer to the position as the Whitten Family Men's Basketball Head Coach.

Mizzou will honor the Whitten family during the Tigers home game against No. 15 Alabama on Saturday.

"The Whittens are the epitome of grit and grace that defines great coaches and teams," Reed-Francois said in a press release. "We are so appreciative of their passion for Mizzou and the Tigers and their desire to leave a legacy for their family to be able to grasp the impact they had on our University and community."
