Kansas City loses second-straight close game

KMIZ

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Chiefs lost their second-straight close game in a 30-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, KC falls 1-2 on the season.

The Chiefs came out of the gates with a very uncharacteristic start on Sunday afternoon. The team turned over the ball three times through three possessions.

The first turnover came when Patrick Mahomes attempted to hit a wide open Marcus Kemp in Charger territory, however, the ball bounced off of his hands into Los Angeles'. Mahomes went from having no interceptions in September at the start of the season to now having two through two games. The other two turnovers came as fumbles from Tyreek Hill and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Nearing the end of the first half the Chargers led the Chiefs 14-0, however, Kansas City was able to make enough forward progress for a Harrison Butker field goal. At the half KC trailed by 11 points.

After the break, Kansas City's offense began to come to life. In the 3rd quarter, Mahomes found Jody Fortson in the end zone for six, making it just a four point ball game at Arrowhead, 14-10.

The Chiefs managed their first lead of the afternoon courtesy of a Mahomes, Edwards-Helaire touchdown connection, which put KC up 17-14.

However, the Chargers kept on plugging. Herbert concluded an 11 play, 75-yard drive with a 20-yard pass to Mike Williams for six. Los Angeles was back on top again 21-17.

Despite three-straight turnovers to start the game, Mahomes went for three-straight in the second half to make it a ball game, as he connected with Mecole Hardman to, once again, retake the lead, 24-21

Kansas City's effort was not enough though, Herbert and the Chargers managed get the edge in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Up next - the Chiefs will travel to Philadelphia to meet the Eagles on Oct. 3.
