Mizzou can’t hang on; Boston College wins in overtime

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou football team managed to come back from a 10-point deficit, but could not hang on against Boston College. The Eagles took down the Tigers 34-31 in an overtime win on Saturday afternoon.

Mizzou came out of the gates strong courtesy of a long run from Tyler Badie, which led to a Barrett Banister's first touchdown of the season. The Tigers led early, 7-0, and the defense followed up that drive with a Shawn Robinson interception to put the ball back in Bazelak's hands.

However, the Eagles responded quickly. Pat Garwo III shed multiple MU tackles to take it 67 yards for the game-tying touchdown.

The Tigers and Boston College went back and forth, offensively, early on. At halftime both teams were tied up with 219 yards of total offense. Bazelak went into the locker room 20-26 for 182 yards and a touchdown.

However, after the half, the tides did not turn MU's way. Boston College ate up about half of the third quarter with a running back Pat Garwo's second touchdown of the afternoon, which put the Eagles up 24-17. From that point on, Garwo took over. He finished with a career-high 25 carries for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

In Mizzou's first possession of the second half, Bazelak threw up his second interception of the season, as he tried to target Banister. Boston College took over and marched it down the field for a 31-yard field goal from freshman Connor Lytton, to put them up 27-17 over Mizzou.

Eli Drinkwitz's group needed an answer to two-straight scoring drives and his offense gave it to him. Bazelak put together a nine play, 75-yard drive, which ended when walk-on Michael Cox brought in his second-career touchdown to put MU down by just three, 27-24.

The Tigers managed to force a critical three-and-out in the fourth quarter, which led to Badie's second touchdown of the day to put Mizzou back on top, 31-27. But with under a minute left in the game, Boston College's Travis Levy punched it in for six from five yards out, which put the Eagles on top 34-31 with 25 seconds left in the game.

The fate of the game rested on the shoulders of sophomore kicker Harrison Mevis and he knocked in a 56-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.

However, Boston College scored within the first couple of minutes to make it 41-34. Once Mizzou got overtime possession, Bazelak threw an interception in the end zone to seal up MU's fate.

Bazelak finished 30-41 for 303 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Badie contributed as well, with 72 yards and two touchdowns.

With the loss, the Tigers fall to 2-2 on the season.

Up next - Mizzou will return home to host Tennessee on Oct. 2.
