Former Mizzou football star accepts new coaching job

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Former Mizzou football star L'Damian Washington is headed to the SWAC. He'll be the new wide receivers coach for Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.

Washington announced his decision on social media on Monday. Last year, MU football coach Eli Drinkwitz hired Washington as the director of player development for the Tigers. He's been in that role ever since, but he'll now return to his home state to coach for the Jaguars.

The Shreveport, La. native played for the Tigers from 2010-13. Washington had 50 catches for 893 yards and 10 touchdowns his senior year. He helped lead Mizzou to its first ever SEC East championship. The Tigers concluded that season with a Cotton Bowl victory.

After graduating from MU, Washington played in the NFL for seven different teams. He also spent time in the AAF and XFL - where he starred for the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Washington began his coaching career in Columbia. He was the head football coach at West Middle School in the fall of 2019.

Off the field - Washington serves on the board of the GP M.A.D.E foundation. He's helped former Mizzou football coach Gary Pinkel make a difference in the lives of underprivileged youth across Missouri.
