Intern Tyler’s tip of the week: April 13, 2020

Every Monday, our sports intern Tyler Driesenga will look back at this past week in sports news. Plus - he'll give us his at-home tip of the week to keep you motivated during these tough times. You can watch his latest tip of the week in the video player above.

Without further ado, here's Tyler:

A prized recruit considering Mizzou is expected to make his college decision this week (for real this time), and Houston Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien is back in the news after another questionable offseason move. Here are the big stories of the week that was in the silent sports world:

LOCAL:

  • MSHSAA cancels spring season: Governor Parson ordered schools to remain online through the rest of the school year on Thursday. With that announcement came MSHSAA’s official cancellation of the rest of the high school spring sports season and postseason. "To our senior participants - we thank you for everything you have done for your schools and communities and wish you the very best in your bright futures," MSHSAA Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhahn said in a press release.
  • Border War nearing return to the gridiron: It appears the renewal of the Mizzou vs. Kansas rivalry will not be limited to basketball. In an email to members of the Tiger Scholarship Fund, MU Athletic Director Jim Sterk said the two schools are ironing out the details of a four-game football series. There is no timetable for when the series would begin.
  • Josh Christopher to announce commitment: High school basketball star Josh Christopher has toyed with the heartstrings of fans on Twitter over the past few months, hinting at where he may go without ever saying anything official. The prized recruit – ranked 10th in the nation by ESPN – will commit on Monday. He’s narrowed his choices down to Mizzou, Michigan, Arizona State, UCLA and USC.

NATIONAL:

  • Texans send second-round pick to Rams for Brandin Cooks: The Texans filled the void at wide receiver by sending the 57th overall draft pick to the Rams for Brandin Cooks. Houston was widely criticized last month after trading superstar wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for a second-round pick and running back David Johnson. Cooks had 42 receptions for 583 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Rams. Hopkins caught 104 passes for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns for the Texans.
  • NFL Draft to be held virtually: The NFL Draft is right around the corner. The league announced last week the draft will be held remotely April 23-25. The Chiefs’ first selection (barring a trade) will be the 32nd overall pick.
  • Golf calendar shuffles, the Masters will be played in November: Last week was supposed to be Masters’ week at Augusta National, but the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus. Golf’s organizing bodies unveiled a new calendar with the Masters scheduled for November 12-15. The new calendar also announced The Open at Royal St. George’s will not be rescheduled.
