Republican state Sen. Bill Eigel said Tuesday that he feels confident about the chances of his unconventional campaign connecting with voters and winning him the nomination for governor.

Eigel started Election Day by casting his ballot with his wife, Amanda Eigel, in St. Charles, according to posts on his social media accounts.

Eigel is running a hotly contested race against fellow candidates Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft and Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe.

According to polling site 538, Ashcroft and Kehoe are tied in voter support at 26% as of July 31. Eigel was slightly behind with 17%. However, in an Instagram reel, Eigel remained unfazed.

"We're feeling very confident today," Eigel says in the video posted Tuesday. "The message I've had out there, my closing argument, 'We're gonna deport the illegals, we're gonna eliminate your personal property tax, we're gonna protect our farm land, we're going to protect the children and families in this state.' Let's go Missouri."

Before becoming a government official, Eigel was an aircraft maintenance officer in the United States Air Force, later becoming a captain and leaving the service in 2007. In 2016, Eigel was elected to be a member of the Missouri Senate.

Eigel is also a business owner. He and his wife purchased St. Louis Skylights, a residential and commercial remodeling company.

Eigel is part of his party's far-right wing. His campaign focuses on eliminating personal property taxes, deporting illegal immigrants and defending elections. Additionally, Eigel says he wants to protect children and families from transgender-related procedures and misinformation in education.

Eigel's campaign is hosting an Election Night watch party in St. Charles Tuesday night.

Polls close Tuesday at 7 p.m.
