Waterman wins Columbia Ward 5 city council seat

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Donald Waterman has won a seat on the Columbia City Council.

Waterman won the race for Ward 5 over Gregg Bush on Tuesday by a margin of fewer than 150 votes out of close to 4,000 cast.

Waterman joined Chuck Basye and John Potter -- two candidates running for a spot on the Columbia Board of Education -- Tuesday at D. Rowes watching the results come in. Bush was expected to be at Southside Pizza and Pub watching the results.

Bush, who was endorsed by the Columbia firefighters' union, said on his website that if elected, he planned to focus on improving multiple aspects of the area. Addressing affordable housing in Columbia is featured on his campaign website, as is improving public safety in the area and creating a more comprehensive transit system. He also said he hopes to improve community development, and keep the economy local.

Bush was also endorsed by LiUNA Local 955, the Sierra Club and Moms Demand Action, according to his website.

Waterman -- who was endorsed by the Columbia Police Officers' Association -- said on his Facebook page that he plans to ensure the Columbia Police Department and Columbia Fire & EMS Department are fully funded. His campaign also wants to focus on making sure infrastructure projects are completed in the area.

Current Ward 5 Councilman Matt Pitzer said he will not be running again this year. He is also listed as endorsing Waterman, according to Waterman's Facebook page. Other endorsements for Waterman -- according to his Facebook page -- include former Mayoral candidate Randy Minchew and former Boone County Clerk Taylor Burks .
