Sen. Hawley calls on Musk to conduct an audit of censorship on Twitter

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KMIZ)

Senator Josh Hawley (R - Mo.) is calling on Elon Musk to carry out an audit of censorship conducted by the social media platform Twitter.

In the letter, Hawley lists a few questions he believes should be included in the investigation.

So I hope that he will turn Twitter into a true free speech platform. And here's how you can start. He can open the books on Twitter. He can lay bare, who has been censored who has been shadowbanned. He can tell us who drove the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story that Twitter pushed so hard two years ago. I think that would be a great way to start in his commitment to free speech.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)

Hawley sent a similar letter to the former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in April 2019.

In his letter, Hawley provided some key points he wants Musk to investigate. Those included finding information about who was behind Twitter "deliberately suppressing" a story from the New York Post on Hunter Biden; how many accounts have been suspended and why; details on "shadowbanned" users; and if Twitter employees had made changes to the platform or deleted records of their time at Twitter since Musk's announced acquisition.

"A public audit like this will prove essential, as you start to rebuild a culture of free speech and open discourse at Twitter, to determining where exactly things went wrong on the platform and who is principally responsible," Hawley's letter said. "No doubt the results will be illuminating for all of us."
