Woman dead after being shot by ICE agent in Minneapolis
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A 37-year-old woman died after being shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a large immigration operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
Federal officials claim the shooting was an act of self-defense.
Mayor Jacob Frey said during a news conference that the woman died despite medical intervention. He blamed the death on ICE, saying claims that the woman tried to run the agent down with her vehicle are untrue.
Frey had a clear message for the federal agency, which has ramped up its actions to detain and deport immigrants since President Donald Trump's election.
"The narrative that this was done in self-defense is a garbage narrative," Frey told reporters. "It has no truth."
Frey's message to the agency: "ICE, get the [expletive] out of the city."
The Missouri Department of Revenue said the vehicle's plates are current and registered out of Kansas City.
Minneapolis Ward 1 City Councilman Elliott Payne shared in a statement on social media that the victim was Renee Nicole Good. The Missouri Department of Revenue told ABC 17 News on Wednesday afternoon that one of the two names the vehicle was registered to was Renee N. Good Macklin.
"Today, ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said.
"An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers. The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased. The ICE officers who were hurt are expected to make full recoveries."
Police Chief Brian O'Hara said the ICE agent shot the woman as she was driving away and that she was not the target of any ICE enforcement activity.
A video showed the woman stopping her vehicle along the street among protesters and telling ICE to leave. She was told to get out of her car, but appeared to drive off before being shot.
The massive federal operation in Minneapolis comes after claims of fraud, some proven, against multiple Somali daycare owners. The investigation has become a rallying call for the right, who say they want to root out government abuse and fraud.
