WATCH: Trump and Zelensky hold tense meeting at White House
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a tense meeting in the White House on Friday.
The two leaders talked about Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a possible ceasefire but were in major disagreement, with the leaders raising their voices at each other at times.
In a statement published to Truth Social after the meeting, Trump called Zelensky disrespectful.
"He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace," Trump wrote.
Missouri U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt praised Trump's actions in the meeting with Zelensky.
"It’s about time we have leaders who say what the American people are really thinking and prioritize the core national interests of America," Schmitt wrote on social media service X. "The American taxpayer is tapped out, and President Trump and VP Vance are spot on."
Sen. Josh Hawley reposted a Trump quote from a Fox News reporter telling Zelensky he's "gambling with Word War III."
"Accurate," Hawley wrote on X.
