Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Democratic President Joe Biden and their negotiating teams have reached a deal to raise the country's debt ceiling, avoiding a national credit default.

Many experts cautioned that default would be an economic disaster but some Republicans seemed willing to let it happen to get more federal spending cuts. Meanwhile, Democrats also held fast in opposition to cutting social programs.
