MSHP reports 7 deaths on Missouri roads over Labor Day weekend
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
There were seven deaths on Missouri roads over Labor Day weekend, according to a Tuesday press release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
This year’s total for fatalities and crashes are lower than last year, where 12 deaths and 306 crashes were reported, according to previous reporting.
MSHP states that 223 crashes, 115 injuries, 108 driving while intoxicated arrests and five drug arrests were made between 6 p.m. Friday-11:59 p.m. Monday.
Two people died in a boating crash on Sunday, the release says. Reven N. Newbound, 30, and a 7-year-old girl -- both of Owensville – died when a boat hit a root wad, which caused the boat to collide with a rock bluff on the Gasconade River. The child was wearing a life jacket, while Newbound was not, according to a MSHP report.
A drowning also occurred Saturday at Golden Eagle Lake in Montgomery County, the release and previous reporting state. William R. Hitzemann, 45, of Weldon Spring, attempted to swim to shore from a boat. While swimming, Hitzemann became distressed and unable to make it to the shore, the release says. He was not wearing a life jacket.
The Tuesday release says MSHP responded to three boat crashes, eight injuries, made eight boating while intoxicated arrests and did not make any arrest related to drugs. Last year, the patrol reported 11 crashes on the water with two injuries and made two BWI arrests.
