Residents say Columbia road is prone to crashes in winter weather

Silvey Street in Columbia remains closed Saturday after a crash Friday night.

"Silvey Street is, like I said, one of the worst roads in Columbia I feel, I've been out there several times to get cars," said Bren Futura, a tow truck operator for Tiger Towing.

Columbia police, fire crews and an ambulance responded to Silvey Street near I-70 Drive Southwest around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

"Every year cars get stuck at the bottom of the hill or on the side of the hill and its just horrible," said Chase Easley who lives near Silvey and I-70 Drive Southwest. "They just get stuck and never seem to learn."

The crash involved at least two cars. It is unknown at this time if ice played a role in the crash.

"Some people will come down the street and they'll see a car that's off on the side and they'll still try and go up this hill and they'll get stuck," Easley said.

According to Columbia Police dispatch records, there have been three car crashes where Silvey Street meets I-70 Drive Southwest since the start of 2020.

"Hills are really bad because once they get icy - there's no way if you're coming from the top down and its an icy road, you're not going to be able to stop especially the minute you hit the breaks your car will start sliding," Futura said.

ABC 17 News has reached out to police, fire and public works officials for more details about the crash and road closure.

"The city does come along and put up these signs but people will move them and try to drive up it anyway," Easley said.
