Columbia man arrested following Friday night standoff

A Columbia man has been charged after a standoff with the Columbia Police Department in the 1400 block of West Worley Street on Friday evening.

CPD reported in a press release that at around 11:45 p.m. Friday, 53-year-old Glen Lee Parey was reported to police after standing near the street and pointing guns at passing vehicles. When officers arrived, Parey also called 911 and threatened dispatchers and police.

CPD's SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Team later responded and arrested Parey on charges of fourth-degree assault, second-degree harassment, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest, misuse of 911 and active warrants.

Ronald Mooney, Parey's next-door neighbor, said that he was woken up by CPD around 4:00 a.m.

Mooney said that a SWAT vehicle and team of officers had the house surrounded and were using the public address system to attempt to get Parey out.

"I was awake at 4 o'clock, they addressed him on the public address system: 'Glen Parey, this is the police. Come outside, you are under arrest.' They just kept repeating that about every two minutes," Mooney said.

Mooney added that the officers were able to get Parey out of the home around 6 a.m. where he resisted arrest.

"6 officers had a little trouble with him, and he does not even weigh but around 130 pounds," Mooney said.

Mooney also believes he heard around 2-3 gunshots during the altercation when Parey left the home.

Another neighbor, who lives on a property behind Parey's house, reported that the SWAT team used some sort of tear gas in an attempt to bring Parey out of the house.

No injuries were reported.

ABC 17 News reached out to the Columbia Police Department to confirm if any shots were fired at the scene; CPD could not confirm and said all the information that they had at this time on the standoff was put in the press release.
