Man arrested for Monday morning stabbing in Mexico

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Police in Mexico arrested a man for allegedly stabbing someone on Monday.

Police Chief Brice Mesko said in a news release on Tuesday that Darrell Smith, 42, was taken into custody for allegedly stabbing a man in the 700 block of Singleton in Mexico.

Smith is charged with second-degree assault and armed criminal action. A confined docket hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Mesko said officers were dispatched to the area just after 10 a.m. on Monday. Smith had allegedly gotten into a fight with a man on Singleton, stabbed them and left the scene. Officers eventually took Smith into custody in the 1200 block of North Washington just before 11 a.m.

The victim, a 57-year-old man, to University Hospital in Columbia with life-threatening injuries, according to the probable cause statement. Mesko wrote the victim is stable.

Court documents say red Milwaukee Fastback box cutter with blood was found. Smith allegedly admitted that he made a slashing motion toward the victim, court documents say.

The incident Monday marked the second stabbing in Mexico over the last few days. Prosecutors charged Robert LeCoque on Monday over accusations that he stabbed three people during a band's performance Sunday morning in the 100 block of South Jefferson Street.
