Second Columbia man charged for involvement in central city shooting death was on parole

Boone County Jail

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 24-year-old Columbia man has been arrested and charged in connection with the deadly shooting of a 20-year-old on Wednesday in central Columbia, making this the second arrest in the case.

Landen Ladaren Jackson is charged with second-degree felony murder, armed criminal action, illegal gun possesion and unlawful use of a weapon after William Riechers of Columbia was shot and killed in the area of Allen and Bryant streets.

Court documents identify Jackson as the person who shot Riechers. The Columbia Police Department announced Jackson's arrest Friday morning on social media.

According to the Columbia Police Department, Jackson was arrested on Thursday. This is the same day that Damarius Kavanaugh, of Columbia, was charged with second-degree felony murder, armed criminal action, illegal gun possession and tampering with evidence in connection with the deadly shooting. Kavanaugh is being held at the Boone County Jail and was denied bond during a Friday hearing. His next hearing will be on Tuesday.

A probable cause statement states video footage police received captured the shooting. Police said the footage shows Riechers and Kavanaugh walking east on Allen Street at 3:44 p.m. A light colored SUV is seen pulling up to the two men one minute later, seconds before the gunshots rang out.

Court documents stated video footage obtained from a nearby business shows a white SUV identified as the suspect vehicle parked in the parking lot. A witness identified a man who matched Jackson's description. The witness also told police they saw the SUV leave the parking lot and head west on East Ash Street moments before the shooting.

Police said video from Parker-Millard Funeral Service and Crematory showed the same white SUV traveling west on East Ash Street and turn north onto Bryant Street at 3:45 just before the shooting. Police matched the vehicle to Jackson using information from a traffic stop on Feb. 21.

Court documents state police later searched Jackson's home on Quail Drive after his arrest. During the search, several guns were located along with documents with Jackson's name on them. One of
the guns located inside the residence was a 9 millimeter Taurus handgun, and a Glock 17 box was also located. A 9mm cartridge casing was recovered at the shooting scene.

Jackson's probable cause statement said Kavanaugh allegedly told police during the interview that he showed Riecher's mother and girlfriend the Instagram account for whom he believed the shooter was. Police asked Riecher's girlfriend to show them the account, the owner of the profile was identified to be Jackson.

Kavanaugh allegedly “gave conflicting statements” about whether someone in the vehicle had shot first before saying he didn’t know who shot first between the person in the vehicle or Riechers.

Jackson and Kavanaugh are being held in the Boone County Jail on no bond.

Court documents state that Jackson was on parole for a Jan. 2020 robbery conviction that he pleaded guilty to in Randolph County in June 2020. Court documents in that case say he stole money and threatened employees at a Daily Mart in the area. Jackson was given a 10-year prison sentence. It's unclear when Jackson was released on parole, ABC 17 News reached out to the Missouri Department of Corrections but they have not responded.

Jackson was also arrested and charged in Sept. 2019 with domestic assault, property damage and tampering with a motor vehicle. He was out on a $6,000 bond for that crime when he robbed the Daily Mart. His bond was revoked and raised to $50,000, Jackson did not bond back out. He pleaded guilty to property damage in May of 2022 and was given a 120-day prison sentence with credit for time served. However, by that time Jackson was already serving his 10-year sentence for the robbery.
