One person dead after officer-involved shooting in Northern Columbia late Saturday night
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Raleigh Dr. in northern Columbia late Saturday night.
According to Columbia Police Department Spokesman Brian McNeill, at around 10 p.m., Columbia Police was assisting the Moberly Police Department in a homicide investigation in the 1500 block of Raleigh Dr. An officer-involved shooting occurred.
McNeill says no police officers were shot. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the suspect has not been released until next of kin is notified.
McNeill says there is currently no threat to the public. This is an active investigation.
A news conference was held at 1 a.m. by the Columbia Police Department at the Molly Bowden Neighborhood Policing Center. Columbia Police Jill Schlude says the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is taking over the investigation.
"The Columbia Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics and Crisis Negotiation Teams responded to the 1500 block of Raleigh Dr., where officers had located the suspect's vehicle," Schlude said. "The Columbia Police Department Swat and CNT (Crisis Negotiation) teams arrived on scene around 9 p.m. and determined the suspect was inside the residence."
Schlude said a woman and multiple juveniles were inside the residence with the suspect. Department members got in phone contact with the woman who told them she was in danger.
"Shortly after 10 p.m., the suspect exited the residence armed with a knife and would not comply with officers commands to drop the knife," Schlude said. "Officers deployed the less lethal impact munitions, as well as a K-9, in an attempt to apprehend the suspect, but neither had the desired effect. Because the suspect remained a threat to officers as well as the people inside the residence."
Schlude says multiple officers fired at the suspect. A Columbia Police officer was injured by a K-9 during the incident and is being treated at the hospital.
An ABC 17 News reporter got to the scene at around 11 p.m. and saw at least eight Columbia Police Department vehicles, a bearcat and a MU Health Care ambulance. The road was blocked off by a police vehicle near the intersection of Edenton Blvd.
Crime scene tape was seen blocking parts of the road between Edenton Blvd. and Citadel Dr.
An ABC 17 News reporter saw a drone being used as police continued investigating the scene.
The Columbia Police Department's Internal Affairs will review the shooting to ensure compliance with internal policy.
"While the Columbia police force will not discuss specific personnel actions or disclose any investigative details, it is standard practice to place officers directly involved in such incidents on administrative leave," Schlude said.
Crime scene tape came down around 5:20 a.m. and the scene fully cleared around 6:10 a.m.
