COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Department of Transportation's map showing road conditions indicated roads around Mid-Missouri remained covered late Monday morning.

The agency's traveler information map had state highways in Mid-Missouri colored purple just before 10:30 a.m., meaning they remained covered in snow and ice for the most part. However, state troopers covering Mid-Missouri said they had only covered one injury crash between midnight and 4 a.m.

Route UU near Midway in Boone County remained closed.

A winter storm dumped varying amounts of snow and ice on Mid-Missouri starting Saturday. Totals varied but the weather station at the Columbia Regional Airport near Ashland had reported 5.6 inches of snow by Monday morning.

Other locations reported, per the National Weather Service:

  • 4 inches at Lake Mykee in Callaway County
  • 3 inches in Holts Summit in Callaway County
  • 5.3 inches near Boonville in Cooper County

State and local officials continued Monday morning to urge people not to travel, saying the ice mixed in with the snow could make driving particularly hazardous. Schools, organizations and businesses around the area closed their doors Monday because of the conditions.

"Snow is still moving out, but conditions won't improve quickly," MoDOT wrote on social media at 6 am. "If you saw snow/ice yesterday, avoid travel today. Crews are working hard, but cleanup will take time in these conditions."

Columbia Public Works had a 30-person crew out Monday morning, according to a news release. They were expected to start plowing neighborhood streets starting with the outer edges of the city and working inward.

Significant snowpack remains on the roads, the city says.

Homeless shelters in Columbia and Jefferson City say they were at capacity Sunday night and expect to remain that way with bitter cold settling in. Lows the next few mornings could bottom out at or near 0 degrees.

The City of Columbia has also canceled curbside recycling collection until Wednesday, citing employee safety.
