Preparing your home for incoming snow

COLUMBIA Mo. (KMIZ)

As city snowplows and local stores gear up for an upcoming winter storm on Saturday, the CDC and the Insurance Information Institute share some recommendations for protecting homes before the snow falls.

In freezing temperatures, roof leaks and pipe damage can happen. According to the Insurance Institute, it's beneficial to clean out gutters to prevent ice damming, a build-up of ice and snow that traps water on the roofs of homes.

To prevent frozen pipes, it's recommended to leave faucets running. Lowe's recommends insulating pipes with foam tubing for extra insulation.

Nationwide says sealing air leaks in windows and doors with rolled-up towels, thermal curtains and plastic insulation covers can help keep your home warm in freezing temperatures.

The CDC also reminds people to be safe when heating their homes. Space heaters should be away from clothing, drapes and furniture. Woodfire stoves and fireplaces should be properly ventilated, and burning things not included in the manufacturer's instructions is not recommended. Candles are also not recommended as a heat source.

Homeowners should also replace batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in case of any emergencies.

When shoveling snow, the Mayo Clinic reminds people that shoveling is an exercise and should be treated as such. It's important to warm up beforehand, drink lots of water and take breaks when needed. Mayo Clinic adds it's best to start shoveling when the snow is fresh, to lift with the legs and to work in small sections.
