Six people hurt after home explosion in Jefferson City early Saturday morning
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Six people were injured after a house exploded on St. Louis Road in Jefferson City around 2:45 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Jefferson City Fire Chief Matt Bowden.
"It was about 2:30 in the morning. I just heard a loud bang, sounded like a bomb went off," a nearby neighbor Donovan Bard said.
Sandra Kornrumpf, another resident in the area said the blast woke her up.
"I couldn't see anything was wrong. So, I went back to bed. Well, no actually, I laid down in bed. Then I saw a fire truck go by. I saw ambulances go by police cars, and I thought maybe it was a wreck, rr maybe something happened at somebody's house," Kornrumpf said.
According to Cole County EMS Chief Eric Hoy, a total of six people were in the house at the time of the explosion. Two people were airlifted to University Hospital and the other four were taken by ambulance. Three of the victims are listed in critical condition and received critical life support. The other three have moderate injuries and are stable, according to Hoy.
First responders arrived to the scene finding multiple victims suffering from injuries ranging from moderate to severe. According to a release, EMS crews provided critical care intervention for the victims and administered CyanoKits.
According to Eric Hoy, Director of Cole County EMS, this incident was unprecedented for the area.
"This is certainly something out of unusual for us, especially to have this many victims involved. So, this is a pretty significant event for this community," Hoy said.
An ABC 17 News reporter at the scene saw smoke billowing into the air. Firefighters were seen putting out a fire on the property and searching through debris. Debris was scattered in neighboring yards and all over the road. The Ameren excavator was digging in the front of the home.
Rescue operations were not easy for first responders due to the home collapsing and the amount of debris from the explosion, according to the release. The fire department's Special Operations Rescue Team tunneled through layers of debris to find the last victim.
After three hours of intense rescue operations, all residents were evacuated, along with two pets, now under the care of animal control.
