Two arrested in connection with reports shots fired call on Boyd lane early Sunday morning

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

An adult and a juvenile were arrested early Sunday morning in connection with reports of shots fired in the 1500 block of Boyd Ln. early Sunday morning, according to a press release from the Columbia Police Department.

The release states that at around 3 a.m. Sunday, Columbia Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 1500 block of Boyd Ln. Evidence of gunfire was found, according to the release.

When officers arrived, they saw a stolen car fleeing from the area. Officers pursued the car to the dead end of N. Waterfront Dr. and five suspects got out of the car and ran away from the officers on foot.

The suspects left the car in drive when they got out, causing it to roll into a lake at the dead end of N. Waterfront Dr.

Columbia police arrested Z'Kardia Williams, 19, of Columbia and a juvenile on charges of second-degree tampering and resisting arrest. Additional suspects are outstanding at this time, according to the release.

Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Chief Gale Blomenkamp said the department was called to the scene.

"We were dispatched to a vehicle in the water. Initially, it was reported that everyone was out of the vehicle. When we arrived, the car was completely submerged," Blomenkamp said.

Since the fire department does not handle water-related rescues, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Dive Team was called in to assist with retrieving the vehicle.

"We didn't do anything. They wanted us to go into the water to hook up the tow truck, and that's something we don't do," Blomenkamp said. "So, we referred them to the Missouri State Highway Patrol dive team."

According to the Columbia Police Dispatch Log, police have been called frequently to the northeast region of the city, where Thursday's homicide and Sunday's incident occurred. Since Oct. 1, there have been six reports of shots heard in the region.

A resident from Edgewater who wanted to remain anonymous due to safety concerns said he was asleep when the Sunday incident occurred. However, he said recent violence in the area is concerning.

"Over the last month or so, I've noticed that there's been a lot of shootings at night," he said. "I live on a lake, so a lot of sound bounces off the lake so I can hear it pretty good, even if it's somewhat far away."

Another neighbor on Boyd Lane who also wanted to remain anonymous for his safety said he has noticed crime in the area has worsened over the past decade.

"It's been real concerning. There's a lot of good people out here that own homes and in the last decade, it's got a lot worse," he said.

The release states this is an ongoing investigation.
