Columbia Police Department

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Columbia Police Department is investigating an assault early Saturday morning on E. Broadway, according to a press release from the department.

According to the release, around 1:40 a.m. Saturday officers were called to the 900 block of E. Broadway for an assault.

Witnesses said the victim was hit multiple times in the head and lost consciousness. The victim was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The suspect is described as a man wearing a pink shirt. The suspect drove away from the scene in a silver sedan, according to the release.

ABC 17 spoke directly with someone who claims the victim was their friend and saw the altercation go down.

The witness, who asked to be identified as Kay due to safety concerns, says her and the victim were sitting outside of NashVegas when they began to be provoked by a man in a pink shirt. Kay says her friend told the man to stop and was then punched in the face. Kay says as he tried to get up the man in the pink shirt punched her friend again, knocking him out onto the concrete.

Kay also says following the altercation the assailant left with his group of friends and drove by in the silver sedan yelling "night, night".

The release does not name the victim.

This is currently an ongoing investigation.
