Mexico Public Safety Department

MEXICO, Missouri (KMIZ)

No one was injured in a house fire in Mexico Friday afternoon on the 800 block of South Jefferson Street.

The Mexico Public Safety Department said firefighters responded to the fire at the two-story home at 12:36 p.m. and when they arrived they found a fire in an upstairs bedroom and the fire was spreading to the attic.

Two people inside the home said they heard smoke detectors go off and saw dark smoke in the upstairs part of the home, which prompted them to call 911.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire but part of the bedroom and surrounding areas did suffer significant fire and water damage.

The fire started in an area where several electrical items were plugged in and were covered by clothing, according to a press release from the Mexico Public Safety Department.
