City of Columbia to hold open house Wednesday on new Municipal Services Center
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The City of Columbia will hold an open house Wednesday to show plans for the construction of a new Municipal Services Center and to hear what the public has to say about the project.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. at Mill Creek Elementary School on W. Nifong Blvd.
The new facilities's master plan includes a salt storage building, storage for snowplows and salt distribution equipment, vehicle parking, an office, electric vehicle charging stations and a refueling facility.
The open house will share information and present diagrams showing the design concept for the new center. City staff are also expected to attend to answer questions from the public.
A public comment form for considerations for the city regarding the process will also be available.
Back in December 2022, the city obtained over 19 acres of land near the W. Nifong Blvd and Sinclair Road intersection south of Mill Creek Elementary, for the new center.
According to the city's website, the facility will help better enhance Columbia Public Work's services by having a site closer to many other Columbia residents and neighborhoods.
Currently, the city only has one salt dome on Big Bear Blvd. on the north side of town, which can be an issue for some snow removal crews treating roads on the south side of town.
Public Works spokesman John Ogan told ABC 17 News that traveling back and forth to refill trucks on salt and other necessary equipment can make wait times climb up to two and a half hours.
Columbia Public Works says they are responsible for caring for about 1,400 lane miles of roads throughout the city.
