Columbia Public Works set to treat roads Friday for expected snowfall

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Public Works began treating city roads a little after 6 a.m. Friday ahead of expected snowfall in Mid-Missouri.

According to a Facebook post from the city, with snow beginning early Friday morning, road temperatures are expected to hit below freezing during the day, which could cause slick spots and refreezing on roadways. Crews will be monitoring those impacts into Friday evening.

Crews will be addressing priority routes and areas first. Those include streets like Broadway, Green Meadows Rd. and the downtown area.

Secondary and third priority routes like Derby Ridge Rd. and Steeple Chase Rd. will be taken care of once priority routes are almost back to normal.

Due to city ordinance, no parking will be available on priority and secondary routes if snow fall reaches over two inches.

According to Columbia Public Works website, they are responsible for removing snow and ice on over 1,400 lane miles throughout the city.

ABC 17 News saw about five snow plow trucks leaving the Public Works Department location on Poplar St. shortly after 6 a.m.

While plows are out on the roads, Public Works is asking drivers to be cautious out on the roads.

Columbia Public Works is not the only crews you may run into.

Columbia plows will treat roadways within city limits, Boone County plows will cover county roads inside or on the boarder of city limits and MoDOT crews will be plowing major roadways like such as Providence Rd., College Ave. and Stadium Blvd.
