Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day event canceled in Columbia, city services canceled due to the holiday and cold temperatures

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

As the dangerously cold temperatures continue to linger around Mid-Missouri, the city of Columbia has had to cancel their scheduled Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. events for Monday.

The city has canceled its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. candlelight walk and memorial celebration scheduled for Monday at the Armory Sports Center in Downtown Columbia and then at St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Columbia Parks and Recreation stated in a press release Friday that the event was canceled due to "dangerously low temperatures and potentially hazardous walking conditions," stated in the release.

However, the holiday and cold are stopping more city services than just the MLK Day memorial celebration.

All city offices will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday and GOCOMO transit will also not operate tomorrow but will resume Tuesday.

The city council meeting has also been moved from Monday to Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Columbia Solid Waste stated in a press release Friday, that residential curbside pickup has been canceled for Tuesday for the "health and safety of our employees" and being exposed to these dangerously low temperatures can be dangerous for employees.

Collection routes scheduled for Monday were already delayed due to MLK day and will not be collected until Jan. 22. The release also stated that "Tuesday through Friday routes will be delayed by one day the remainder of the week."

The warming center available at City Hall will not be open Monday, according to a spokesperson from the city.
