A nine-member City of Columbia Public Works snowplow crew will begin working on Saturday, preparing for overnight winter weather heading to Columbia.

According to a news release from the City, crews will report for duty at 6 p.m. in anticipation of the storm. The winter weather system is expected to roll into the area between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Snowplow crews will be using salt brine to pretreat curves, intersections and elevated surfaces such as bridges, according to the City, these areas are most susceptible to slickness.

The City said the primary concern will be slushy conditions, for late-night travelers. Drivers are asked to reduce speeds, refrain from tailgating and allow travel time for their trip.

According to the City, the roads are expected to dry out during the day on Sunday, prior to air temperatures falling below freezing Sunday night.

Crews are expected to end their response around 8 a.m. Sunday morning, but Public Works said they will adjust their operational plans in case of worsening conditions.

The city asks that drivers pay attention to changing road conditions and monitor the forecast.
