Friday night high school football games delayed due to the heat
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
High school football games across mid-Missouri are being delayed Friday due to unsafe high temperatures.
Tonights kickoff for the Rock Bridge vs. Park hill South football game has been pushed back to 8 p.m. ABC 17's Sportszone Football Friday have been calling this the game of the week.
Other schools have also had to delay start times due to the heat. Some of those games include Boone vs. Odessa, Mexico vs. Centralia, Booneville vs. Pleasant Hill and more are all set to start at 8 p.m. Friday.
A spokesperson for Columbia Public Schools told ABC 17 News the kickoff time delays are due to the district following the Missouri State High School Athletics and Activites Association heat protocol guidelines.
MSHSAA uses a wet bulb globe thermometer measuring heat and humidity levels during sporting events, including practices.
The wet bulb glode takes temperature, amount of sunlight or cloud coverage, wind speeds, heat and humity into consideration to determine if conditions are safe enough to practice in.
As stated in MSHSAA guidelines, no outdoor workouts or games can be played if the wet bulb glode thermometer detects a temperature of above 92 degrees. Teams must either decide to cancel or delay the event.
