Cooling centers available as dangerous heat hits Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The ABC 17 News Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a weather alert day for Thursday and Friday as the heat index reaches dangerous level.

It is expected the heat index will peak in the 105-110 window Thursday and Friday.

The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services is recommending residents to avoid outdoor activities during the intense heat.

"We of course encourage you don't be outside if you can help it, but for those who have to work outside, don't overexert yourself. If you can help it stay hydrated drink more than you think you may need," PHHS spokesman Ryan Sheehan said.

So far, MU Health Care on Thursday has not seen any patients with heat-related injuries.

If your home does not have air conditioning, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends:

  • Use stove and oven less.
  • Take cold showers and baths.
  • Spend time in air conditioning at a mall or public library.

Heat related illness can happen quickly and become severe. The CDC lists symptoms you should look out for including:

  • Dizziness
  • Heavy sweating
  • Nausea

Ameren also gave some tips to stay cool in a Wednesday press release, including: creating a breeze, keeping air vents clear, close window shades, utilize alternative cooking methods (such grilling outside to use less energy) and utilizing cooling centers.

Cooling centers are available across the state. Columbia offers the following locations:

  • Daniel Boone Regional Library – 100 West Broadway Street
  • St. Francis House – 901 Rangeline Street
  • The Salvation Army Columbia Corps Community Center – 1108 West Ash Street
  • The Salvation Army Harbor House – 602 Ann Street
  • Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services – 1005 West Worley Street

Jefferson City offers the following cooling centers:

  • Clarke Senior Center- 1310 Linden Drive
  • Missouri River Regional Library- 214 Adam Street
  • The Salvation Army Center of Hope- 927 Jefferson Street

The Columbia/Boone County Department of Health and Human Services also reminds those on mental health medications that they may be more prone to heat related crises.

HVAC repair companies advise residents to check their AC filters and clean air ducts before extreme heat hits. Air filters should typically be replaced monthly.
