Columbia police see more fireworks calls over Fourth of July holiday

The Columbia Police Department saw an increase in the number of fireworks calls this year.

According to the Columbia Police Department six-hour dispatch log, there were 90 calls for fireworks on Tuesday and 146 calls for fireworks since Monday. This is compared to the 106 reports between July 3-5 last year, according to data from a June 30 press release from the City.

The first fireworks call for 2023 was logged at 12:03 a.m. Tuesday and the last call was 11:56 p.m.

The city ordinance states: "Every person who shall...possess, use, burn explode or set off any firecracker, torpedo, bomb, rocket, pinwheel, fire balloon, Roman candles or any other firecracker or fireworks other than a sparkler within the city shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.
