2022: A look back at weather and sports in Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The past year has not only seen its fair share of news stories from across Mid-Missouri, but weather and sports had its time in the headlines.

Feb. 2 would had a snow storm where some parts of Missouri saw close to 11 inches of snow. With 15.5 inches of our total snow fall for last winter falling in February here in Columbia.

On May 19, Phelps County had severe weather damage. 

The summer months would be dominated with record heat and drought. The lack of rain would extend into the late summer and the drought would plague Mid-Missouri and the rest of the country.

2022 gave us one last blast of winter before Christmas as an arctic front would set up bring temperatures into the negatives and a reported wind chill of minus 33 to Mid-Missouri.

In March, the University of Missouri announced their next basketball coach in Dennis Gates, he was hired after Cuonzo Martin was fired in early march.  

The Mizzou gymnastics team had a season for the history books by reaching the national championships.

Sports Director Nathalie Jones traveled to Las Vegas to witness legendary Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel be inducted to the college football hall of fame.

And the return of the Border Showdown at Mizzou Arena would see the Tigers host the Kansas Jayhawks before a sold out crowd.
