Callaway County man charged with stealing two catalytic converters in Jefferson City
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Holts Summit man faces multiple charges after he was accused of stealing a pair of catalytic converters on Sunday.
Charles Burns, 52, was charged with two counts of stealing a catalytic converter and two counts of second-degree property damage. A $5,000 bond was set, according to Casenet.
A Jefferson City police officer responded to a burglary alarm at Canteen Service of Central Missouri in the 2700 block of Merchants Drive. An alarm company told police it had access to the security cameras and could see someone under trucks, according to a probable cause statement.
One of the owners of the business told police he reported that two of his vehicles’ catalytic converters had been cut off and that he got a call from the security company that saw the suspect, Burns, walking towards Metro Drive.
Police talked to Burns, who denied any knowledge of the theft occurring, but was detained while the officer looked at the security video.
The officer said in the statement that Burns was seen in the video climbing up from the ground with the vehicle’s catalytic converter in his hands with a saw before he ran away. The officers claims Burns was in another security video doing the same thing.
Police found a missing catalytic converter and the saw in the 200 block of Metro Drive.
