City of Columbia reminds residents of the risks of illegal dumping

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

City of Columbia officials is reminding residents of the risks of illegal dumping.

City officials say they have seen this happening more frequently at recycling centers and say the illegal dumping poses a threat to public health.

Some of the problems the city has noticed is people dropping off large items that would require a scheduled bulky item pickup and people placing non-recyclable items in containers meant for recyclable materials

According to a statement from the city, those caught illegally disposing of waste can be prosecuted.

City officials say they will continue to monitor these sites to solve this problem.

"We value our relationships with participating community partners and strive to provide quality services to the community," City Manager John Glascock said. "In order for the City to provide the best quality service, it is imperative that residents follow the program’s guidelines in disposing of their refuse items and not dumping items illegally in recycling centers."
