New FBI reports shows Missourians lost over $100 million last year from internet crimes

The FBI released a new report on the 'Internet Crime Complaint Center 2020 Internet Crime Report,' the report also shows statistics for regarding COVID-19 scam complaints.

The FBI took information from 791,790 complaints of suspected internet crime—an increase of more than 300,000 complaints from 2019—and reported losses exceeding $4.2 billion.

The report for the state of Missouri shows there were 6,228 complaints filed and $103,618,902 were loss last year.

According to the report the three largest crime type by victim count were non-payment/non-delivery (1,738), no lead value (1,013) and extortion (894).

The three crimes with the largest amounts of money lost are business email compromise (BEC) and email account compromise ($91,191,387), confidence/romance fraud ($9,238,380) and non-payment/non-delivery ($3,370,742).

The top three crimes across the country reported by victims in 2020 were phishing scams, non-payment/non-delivery scams, and extortion.
