Callao man charged after Boone County chase ends in fiery wreck in Callaway County

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Callao man is being charged after a Thursday chase from Interstate 70 and US 63 connector ends in a fiery wreck just inside the county limits of Callaway County.

According to court documents, Mark Smith was allegedly driving a vehicle with a stolen dealer's plate when a Boone County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop Smith.

The deputy reports the chase reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour and "placed multiple innocent motorists in harm's way."

Officials say the pursuit continued a half-mile into Callaway County along E St Charles RD before the vehicle rolled once and then caught fire.

Court documents state that Smith was rescued from the vehicle.

During a post-Miranda interview, Smith told officials he got the license plate from a friend that worked at a dealership but Smith would not tell who he got it from.

Smith is charged with resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and driving while license revoked.

Smith has a $50,000 cash only bond.
