(CNN) — A person was shot during an encounter with federal immigration agents in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department.

Just after 4 p.m., agents with ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations encountered a person they were targeting, and they fired shots, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.

The person injured in the shooting was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was conscious, police said. The injury was not considered life-threatening, according to the law enforcement source.

Two agents were also injured in the encounter, according to the source, and they also are being treated at a local hospital.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing several gunshots, according to CNN affiliate WABC.

CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

NYPD were not involved in the incident in the Marble Hill neighborhood just north of Manhattan and were not at the scene of the shooting, the department said in a statement on X.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she’s been briefed on the incident.

“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” she said in a statement. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
