JACKSON, Mississippi (WAPT) — The family of a recent Mississippi State graduate killed over the weekend in Jackson wants justice.

Police are still searching for the gunman who fired multiple shots at the house were Jertia Evans was struck. Her family believes she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“We want justice for my little sister. She didn’t deserve this,” said Evans’ sister, Ebbony Taylor Winfield.

Evans’ life was cut short just as she was making big strides.

“She was a beautiful girl. She had just graduated from Mississippi State in fashion and design. She had big goals, she was driven, ambitious,” Winfield said.

Her sister said even before graduating from MSU, the 23 year-old had her own business doing hair.

Police said Evans was shot early Saturday morning while she sat on the front porch at her grandmother’s house on Barbara Ann Drive.

“She would go there to use her grandmother’s house for her clientele to do hair lashes, or whatever she did for whatever appointment she had booked,” Winfield said.

Evans was still taking classes and working while taking physical therapy for a leg injury. She survived a serious car crash a month ago.

Investigators believe the shooting that took Evans’ life was a retaliation after a juvenile who allegedly robbed someone of $300 at an Oak Forest Drive tennis court.

“Something needs to happen. An arrest needs to be made, investigations done,” Winfield said.

As they wait for answers from police, Evans’ family is remembering her positive personality.

“Joyous, beautiful soul, spirited. Always kept a smile on her face,” Winfield said.

According to her family, Evans’ boyfriend, Danny Brown, lost his life to violence two years ago.
