DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — It’s the start of Teacher Appreciation Week and students are releasing a thank you note through song.

Donald Gee went to Johnston High School. His mom is a Des Moines teacher, but this thank you goes beyond Iowa’s borders.

“Thank You Teachers” is a song he wrote for his mom, and all the other teachers that have made a difference in his life. He even worked with seven-time Grammy nominated producer Kendrick Dean, who was a high school history teacher before becoming a music producer.

Gee decided to put a call out nationwide, to get others involved. More than 100 students joined to create a virtual choir in the video for Teacher Appreciation Week. Two dozen students in the video are from Iowa.

Districts across the country are sending it out today to show thanks.

“I felt like opening the song up to students around Iowa and around the United States could make the song more complete and a lot more meaningful to a lot more people, especially because I think students everywhere wanted an opportunity to say thank you,” Gee said.

Students can continue to participate in the “Thank You Teachers Campaign” by sending messages to their teachers about how they’ve made a difference in their life and including the video link.
